Jesmond Joggers Club History

Jesmond Joggers Running Club was founded in 2006

  • August 2006 – Club founded by Scott Armstrong & Paul Rea
  • Mon 4th September 2006 – Club’s first training session
  • November 2006 – Bryan Laycock wins our first Runner of the Month Award
  • November 2007 – Club applies to become affiliated with England Athletics.
  • April 2008 – Club becomes affiliated to England Athletics
  • September 2008 – Club enters a senior & veteran men’s team in the North East Harrier League for the first time.
  • December 2008 –Jenny Adair is the very first winner of the Runner of the Year award.
  • April 2009 – Ian McDonald & Hannah Gibbin are appointed the club’s first Men & Women’s captains.
  • August 2009 – Club enters both a Men & Women’s team in The North East Harrier League.
  • March 2010 – Senior & Veteran Men’s team finish 3rd overall in Div 3 of the North East Harrier League. The Senior women’s team finish the season in a respectable 14th position in their debut season
  • March 2011 – The Senior & Veteran Men’s team finish runners up in Div 3 of the North East Harrier League clinching promotion to Div 2. Senior Women’s team finish the season in a respectable 11th position in their 2nd full season.
  • March 2012 – The Senior & Veteran Men’s team were relegated from Div 2 on the last day of the NEHL season at Prudhoe. The senior women’s team finished 7th in Div 2.
  • March 2013 – The Senior & Veteran Men’s team win promotion to the NEHL Div 2 for the second time, narrowly missing out on the Div 3 title on count back
  • September 2013 – Michael Hedley sets a club record of 1:17:59 for the Half Marathon.
  • March 2014 – Jenny Hitchott finishes 3rd overall in the Senior Women’s NEHL Grand Prix
  • December 2014 – Ian McDonald is appointed as the Club’s first President
  • March 2015 – The Senior & Veteran Men’s team win the NEHL Division 3 title, it’s the club’s first piece of silverware.
  • September 2015 – The Club host & win the very first Presidents Cup relays
  • March 2016 – Both the Men’s & Women’s Teams are relegated from their respective divisions in the North East Harrier League
  • Summer 2016 – Our 10th Anniversary
  • April 2017 – The Senior and Veteran Women’s XC team win the NEHL Division 3 title
  • January 2018 – Geoff Blair is appointed as the Club’s new President and Simon Wells as the Club’s new Chairman
  • August 2018 – JJ Women’s Team wins the Gosforth Summer relays.  Our first club win in a NE race
  • Spring 2020 – Women’s NEHL team are promoted to Div 1 having narrowly missed out on the cup.  Men’s NEHL team are promoted to Div 2
  • 2020-21 – COVID disrupts the Club but members continue to meet when restrictions apply
  • Summer 2021 – Our 15th Anniversary
  • 2021 – Paul Waddell is our first ever NECAA individual gold medallist, winning the long jump title at the NECAA Track and Field Championships.
  • 2023 – JJs Master team (M45-54) win our first team medals at the NEMAA Cross Country Championships finishing 3rd.
  • 2024 – The JJs Master M55-64 win our first NEMAA Cross Country team title at the NEMAA Cross Country Championships.
  • 2024 – Paul Waddell wins our first senior NECAA indoor title at the NECAA Indoor Championships, taking gold in the triple jump.
  • 2024 – JJs Women finish 3rd in the NEHL Division 1
  • 2025 – JJs Women finished 2nd at the NECAA Cross Country Championships, collecting our first ever silver medals at a county championship.
  • 2025 – JJs women win our first ever NECAA title, winning the gold medal at the NECAA Cross Country Relays.
  • 2025 – JJs Women finish 2nd in the NEHL Division 1, missing out on the title by two points in a weather curtailed season. Our highest ever finish in the NEHL. 
  • 2025 – JJs men finish 4th in the NEHL Division 2, our highest ever finish in the men’s league.
  • 2025 – Laura Chapman is selected to represent the NECAA team at the Inter Counties Mountain Race, our first county selection.
  • 2025 – The JJs men are 2nd at the Gosforth Relays, the JJs women finish 3rd. Our first ever double podium at one event.
  • 2026 – JJs Women win bronze medals at the NECAA Cross Country Relays.
  • 2026 – The JJs complete teams in the National Cross Country Championships for the first time, in the men’s 9 man team, 6 man team and women’s team in Sedgefield.
  • 2026 – JJs Masters M55-64 men win bronze at the NEMAA Cross Country Championships.
  • 2026 – JJs Women finish 3rd in the NEHL, our third podium position in a row in the women’s league.
  • 2026 – The JJs 20th Anniversary.
  • 2026 – The first JJs Anniversary Relay race.
