Watergate is an office block in Washington which gave its name to a political scandal in the 1970’s. It’s also the name of a country park in Lobley Hill, Gateshead home of the Watergate 5k race hosted by Low Fell Running Club. The race is a two lap trail race race through the country park and around the lake. This year’s race included a shorter junior race and the NEMAA Championships. This year the only JJ’s to sign up were Geoff and Cliff. A beautiful sunny evening greeted a field around 170 runners. Race HQ was located at the cafe. Dog walkers clutching cans of lager smiled in encouragement as the runners warmed up around the lake. The race started promptly at 7.15 and the lead runners set off at a blistering pace through the undulating wooded trails. It was a very fast and competitive field with Cliff being the first JJ to finish in a time of 20.14. Geoff finished in 21.48 continuing a return to form. Post race all runners received a race medal. Presentations followed and then a free buffet with sandwiches for all runners to round off a great evening.
