The Blaydon race made its welcome return after two years of virtual races and a good turn out of JJs went gannin down the Scotswood road where we pass’d the foaks upon the road just as they wor stannin’ Thor wes lots o’ lads an’ lasses there, all wi’ smiling faces, and it was a joy to behold in one of the North East’s best races according to your club chairman.
With a new start on the Quayside, the race was delayed as nervous runners stood patiently with the Tyne Bridge looking on. Once the Mayor had rung the bell, the lads an lasses were off with Ali making the dash up the Quayside in the first bunch of runners. The other JJs followed and the course wound up to the Scotswood Road as we flew past Airmstrang’s factory, and up to the “Robin Adair”, Just gannin’ doon te the railway bridge, (now the Blaydon bridge) some of the runners wheels flew off, and they pushed hard as we flew across the Chain Bridge reet into Blaydon toon, being cheered by Sophie and Gerry in to the home straight and a welcome beer and Pease Pudding and Ham sandwiches and in some instances, tripe, as selected by Beth. A great race and a great event which always gets a good JJ entry out and some of the JJs retired to the pub to swap notes. If you haven’t raced it before watch out for entries next February.
