The Anita Nott race is the only “Women’s only” race in the North East.

Anita Nott was a member of Heaton Harriers but was tragically killed in 2006 when on a training run, and since, this race has been dedicated to her name. Over the years the race has attracted both local running clubs and non-club members to take part in a unique women’s only race set in the glorious Jesmond Dene.  Anita was keen to see women getting involved in running and welcomed all abilities and ages. It was touching to stand amongst 341 female runners on Armstrong Bridge for a minute’s silence in remembrance.
For many of us, this was the first-time taking part in the race and were bracing ourselves for a challenging course likened to the dreaded Jesmond Dene parkrun. The race got off to a rapid start along Armstrong Bridge and descended quickly into the Dene. The course was an undulating route, snaking through the narrow paths then looping back over the bridge before heading into Heaton Park. We had plenty of team support to help push us along and at the 3km mark we were spurred on by the rest of the JJs, who took a pit stop on their steady Monday run to cheer us on. With the course looping back on itself, there was a sense of camaraderie between all runners encouraging each other along. The final sprint took the runners back to Armstrong bridge where we were rewarded with a selection of well-earned chocolate bars.
Well done to all 16 of the JJ ladies who took part in this inspiring race. Hopefully next year we will see an even bigger turnout!
