It was a truly historic day at the London Marathon, with headlines dominated by a remarkable sub-two-hour performance at the front of the race a landmark moment for marathon running and with the women’s world record being set too, eight JJs could say they were in the most historic marathon of all time.

Eight Jesmond Joggers took to the start line in warm conditions, supported by the ever-present, electric London crowds. The atmosphere didn’t disappoint, and neither did the performances, with strong runs across the board and a standout achievement for the club.

Leading the way was Laura Chapman, who delivered an exceptional run to finish in 3:05:31, setting a new Jesmond Joggers Club Record in the process, a fantastic achievement on one of the biggest stages in world running.

There were also impressive performances throughout the field, with all the JJs producing well-paced efforts in challenging conditions. A brilliant day out for the JJs at one of the world’s biggest marathons, strong performances, a club record, and memories from a truly historic race. We are all proud of you.

Wrekenton NEHL 19/01/2025 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/2025/02/01/wrekenton-nehl-19-01-2025/ Sat, 01 Feb 2025 19:27:51 +0000 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/?p=2251 With the club racing on at last four different fronts this weekend, it was great to see so many club members out at a cold and freezing Wrekenton. Who knew that Wrekenton had its own microclimate, being noticeably colder than when we left Jesmond.
Storming runs from all our runners helped the JJs place high in the respective divisions. Thank you to everyone who race on a very chilly day and a big thank you to the team captains for their hard work in getting you out to race. Three more rounds to go and we can do something special this year!
The women set off first in the first of the NEHL for 2025. With potentially three more fixtures to come and the club being split three ways with races galore this weekend, a good showing would set us up for a good finishing position over the next three races. The JJs women set off with gusto round a rather winter wonderland course at Wrekenton. The frozen ground meant that the going was firm and fast and the women didn’t disappoint.
Liz Heard set off at a good pace and was first home, with Jane Pugh two places behind. Emma Dixon and Alice Hartley both had storming runs to close the team in first place in division 1! Emma was our fastest woman on the day, with 27:16, with Emily Davis second fastest coming out of the fast pack, 9 seconds down. Great runs from all the JJ women saw them close in a pack well to push other clubs down. The JJ women did a great job of putting us in the mix in Division 1, showing that we have real strength and depth.
With temperatures still not climbing, and it feeling even colder, the men got off to a great start with Jelle Vinkenoog having a storming run and finishing 24th place out of the slow pack. Nicholas Allen was out fastest on the day with a great 35:24 clocking. Emilio Vazquez and Bertie Marks packed well to be next home with Joel Birks, with our second fastest time of the day and George Balden made up the first scoring six. A good packing of JJs still us close another team and help propel the JJs to potentially first place in Division 2 of the NEHL. A great performance from all the men on a very cold day.

Brass Monkey Half Marathon 19/01/2025 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/2025/02/01/brass-monkey-half-marathon-19-01-2025/ Sat, 01 Feb 2025 19:24:40 +0000 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/?p=2249 Ice Cold in York
The Brass Monkey Half Marathon has a reputation as a fast-paced club race popular with those seeking PB’s. This year’s race on Sunday 19th January did not disappoint as the JJ’s racked up a string of impressive PB’s and club records tumbled rapidly.
As other JJ’s successfully battled the cold at the NEHL XC at Wrekenton a total of 18 JJ’s made the early morning journey to York Knavesmire Racecourse for the start of the race. After gratefully enjoying the warmth of the racecourse facilities it was time to line up in the bitterly cold conditions for the race start. Undeterred by the freezing conditions runners were soon sprinting around the pan flat closed road course which provided great conditions for running. As ever it was well marshalled with great support from the roadside crowds. A good number of JJ’s past and present cheered the runners on their way. The winds were light and it stayed dry as the route headed southward through the Yorkshire countryside before turning back towards the racecourse.
First JJ across the line was Jonny Greenwell pushing the limits in a brilliant time of 1:23.37 and a PB by 90 seconds. Joe Inns was close behind in another PB performance of 1:23.44 Laura Chapman was the fastest female JJ and stormed home in a PB time of 1:24.23, breaking her own club record in the process. Next female JJ across the line was Hannah Bethany Wilson smashing it in 128.26. Floor Christie De-Jong was the third female and another PB in 1:34.51 showing her dedicated training is paying off. The number of JJ’s across the line increased rapidly with most smashing their previous PB’s. Rich Carter and Sam Prior were both under the 90 minutes mark. Cliff Veitch was 1:31.33. Sarah Wann and Michael Crowe incredibly both managed to knock over 30 minutes off their previous best times. Kisi Hardman making her debut race as a second claim JJ member finished in 1.42.10. Rowan Beach ran his first ever half marathon in great time of 1:46.09. Martha “the motivator” Radley ran with her mother and successfully paced her around to another PB. In a nod to York’s long chocolate heritage, finishers were rewarded with a chocolate Freddo on crossing the line and (if ordered on entry) an excellent long sleeve T-shirt before returning to the warmth of the racecourse facilities.

Happy 18th Birthday to the JJs!
A lovely night with lovely people, saw our 18th Birthday celebrated in style. With our friends from Newcastle Frontrunners, 76 runners finished the 3.8mile course.
Louis Gardner retained his JJs title, four seconds outside the course record, which we believe stands at 20:12 set in 2014 by Michael Hedley. Stephan Garbutt from NFR was second and his second time on the podium. Richard Carter completed the men’s podium holding off another NFR in Steven Macdonald.
In the women’s race, Laura Chapman retained her title, finishing 9th overall with Laura Cheetham and Izzy Sharrock making up the women’s podium both inside the top 16.
In the vet’s races, two new JJs champions were crowned with Floor Christie De-Jong and Laurence White taking the titles, with Laurence finishing 13th overall.
Each podium runner was awarded with a Start Fitness voucher which was kindly provided by Bill Armstrong, one of our four lifetime members, Thank you Bill for your generosity.
A big shout out to all the volunteers on the night, the marshals, David and Tracey for managing the refreshments table, those who worked behind the scenes before the race, Kate Black who co-ordinated the entries and Kate Winstanley who took some lovely photos of the night. These can be found on the JJs Facebook page. Check them out.
Here’s to another year at the JJs! Keep on running, having fun, enjoying each other’s company and running with wings on your feet and remembering not to burst the boiler in the process.

Of Endurancel Life’s race, so fierce and bold
In Northumberland, where skies were grey

And winds did howl on this cold winter’s day.
Sarah Wann, with streak so bright and grand,
Completed the ultra, with heart and hand,
In six hours, thirty-seven minutes, and thirty-eight,
A feat of strength, a victory to celebrate.

Lizzie Warnes battled on, with fierce might,
And completed the marathon in six hours and thirty,
With tough conditions, and weather so bleak,
Her spirit and resolve did never weaken.

Eliza Gutteridge and Lorna Dagg,
In the half marathon, did shine and brag
Of times so great, with strides so strong,
Two hours, thirteen and three, and two hours, twenty-three and two, they did belong.

Ben Talks, with valiant heart and soul,
Completed the half marathon, with great control,

In two hours, and fifty-seven seconds,
A triumph of will, of spirit so resplendent.

Liam Blatch, with fervor and might,
Followed close, with all his might,
In two hours, four minutes, and four,
His victory and spirit, to always adore.

Niran Patel and Oli Howell,
In the half marathon, did not cower nor cower,
With a knee injury, they pushed on and on,
And completed the race, in two hours, twenty-eight minutes, and forty-seven seconds, with hearts so strong.

Victoria Thompson, with flying feet,
Battled the winds and cold, with spirit so neat,
In the 10k race, she did soar,
And finished in one hour, three minutes, and fifty-three, to forever adore.

Thus, the Endurancelife race was done,
And with it, tales of glory and battles won.

Congratulations to all who dared to try,
For in their hearts, they shall forever fly.

Northumberland Beach Trail Runs 10km and HM – 29 January 2023 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/2023/01/31/northumberland-beach-trail-runs-10km-and-hm-29-january-2023/ http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/2023/01/31/northumberland-beach-trail-runs-10km-and-hm-29-january-2023/#respond Tue, 31 Jan 2023 15:00:38 +0000 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/?p=1541 Ice Cold in Druridge Bay

With the weather more in favour of Windy Miller (ask your parents) than racing, the intrepid JJs rolled up to a wind swept and cold Druridge Bay for the lovely Northumberland Beach Trail Runs. These comprised of a 10km and a Half Marathon. With both races setting off together, there was a last minute decision of what clothes to wear, borrowing of gloves and Simon Baker still in his tracksuit one minute before the start. With kit discarded, the race got underway. A quick trip round the lake, then it was on to the beach for a wind swept three miles on hard compacted sand. The 10km race departed half way along the beach to get their run in to the finish with Laurence White being the first JJ, and 2nd M50, whilst our other Lawrence, Dr Chris, was the second home. With evergreen Storm Smith bringing up the rear.

The Half was still in progress and Tom Dowling was having an outstanding race, coming home in 4th place and 2nd V40. Not to be outdone, Laura Chapman bagged a place on the podium with a stunning 2nd place and 1stsenior woman. Cliff Veitch was next home and 4th V50 with Simon Wells next with a 9th V50 placing. Simon Barker was next home and Jessica Williams followed with her 2nd half marathon in as many weeks. David Newman shrugged off a heavy cold to bring up the rear with his third half marathon in as many weeks. Sadly, the race was slightly short due to a human error and the tide being in, but this didn’t distract from a great race round a lovely part of Northumberland.

With the wind still biting the JJs cheered each other home before dashing for the car and Cliff kindly allowing your chairman to put on the heated seat for the journey home.

The Drop – Sunday 10 December 2022 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/2022/12/12/the-drop-sunday-10-december-2022/ http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/2022/12/12/the-drop-sunday-10-december-2022/#respond Mon, 12 Dec 2022 17:24:09 +0000 http://jesmondjoggers.co.uk/?p=1450

Limited to 40 competitors, the run was described as ‘We put you on a bus…We blindfold you…We take you to an unknown location…You have no tech, no map, no watch, no idea where you are…Will you make it back to HQ or be lost for ever? ‘The Drop’

Two options were available 10 miles and 15 miles as the crow flies from the start. The Jesmond Jackals (Mark Adamson, Laura Chapman, Tom Dowling, Jonny Greenwell, Oliver Howell, Joe Inns and Niran Patel) all signed up as a team in the 10 mile event.

With impeccable timing the Jesmond Joggers Christmas Party was scheduled the day before The Drop, ruining plans for a heavy sesh. So it was with heavy hearts that the Jesmond Jackals departed from the festivities at a sensible hour in order to wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready to take on The Drop. The weather took a turn for the worse, with ice, rain and snow all predicted, leading to last minute additions to the mandatory kit each person was expected to carry (full waterproofs, whistle, foil blanket, hat, gloves, insulated layers, water, snacks, torch). No navigational equipment was allowed with all watches, mobiles stashed in sealed bags, only to be opened in an emergency.

Sure enough The Jackals woke to find a heavy frost and snowfall overnight leading to treacherous paths. The Jackals all met at The Cosey Dove in Spital Tongues, Oli was unable to join the team on the day and it was no real surprise that Niran ‘The Flake’ Patel would not be coming either, faking an ankle injury on his way in. The Jackals didn’t really understand what to expect, with details of the race specifically vague. After race number collection the Jackals boarded the bus and donned on their blindfolds with excitement. As the bus departed The Jackals attempted to work out where the bus was headed by feeling the turns and speed of the road. The driver being wise to this tactic, chose a circuitous route through town, circling roundabouts and doubling back, thwarting any attempts to work out where he was headed. It worked! The Jackals we were completely clueless when they arrived at their destination.

Blindfolds were removed and the Jackals exited the bus, and watched their fellow competitors scatter off in all directions.  It took a beat until Mark A. exclaimed, ‘it’s the start of The Pie and Peas race we are in Ovington’, and sure enough he was right. Knowing exactly which way to go from there did wonders for The Jackals motivation, and they quickly left their competitors behind, as they headed down the hill, through Ovingham, over the Tyne and along the riverside path through to Wylam and following the Hadrian’s Way cycle path back to Newburn.  It was a beautiful route along the Tyne, The Jackals appreciating the crunch of the snow and ice underfoot and the crisp air, giving the event a very festive vibe.

Taking it in turns to push the pace, the Jackals made great progress along the riverside path but being mindful of Jonny ‘Gammy Ankle’ Greenwell,  Tom ’Dodgy Shin’ Dowling and Laura ‘Covid Lungs’ Chapman; with only Joe and Mark appearing to be completely injury/illness free.

Past Newburn the route took a less beautiful route, through Lemington, over the A1 and northbound to the West Road, cutting through Cowgate, where delightfully crunchy frozen leaves were replaced with frozen dog sh*t and an uphill struggle. Cutting through Nuns Moor the team arrived back at the Cosey Dove and were genuinely surprised to find out we were the first back and with a comfortable lead of over 30mins on 2nd place. Yay!

The team celebrated their success in the warmth of the Cosey Dove with Cheesy Chips (MarkTM) and some free beer courtesy of the generous barman.

JJ Runadvisor – 5 stars!

1st place – Jesmond Jackals – 1:53:56.

It was a damp and dingy Sunday morning.  Most are still tucked up in their warm beds, but for Tom and Gerry, they were off out to brave the miserable weather and conquer the steep hills that lead up to the Hexhamshire Common. A ten mile fell race that begins and ends in Allendale.
With Tom’s class one driving and Gerry’s quality patter, the journey was brisk and smooth. Arriving for a 09:30 registration meant there was plenty of time for snacks, last minute kit checks, photo shoots  and toilet trips.
The race briefing was short and sweet with the race organiser gently reinforcing race rules that maintained the spirit of fell running.  Finally, the back door of the community hall was opened for participants to exit and make their way to the start line.  An unwelcoming cold wind and rain greeted the runners as they stepped outside.  Tom and Gerry strolled over to the start flag as fellow runners engaged in intense high knee warm ups and stripped down to running vests to expose their skin to the nonexistent sun.
The clock struck 11:00 and they were off! As the runners pulled away from the start line, a late horn was sound which was followed by a synchronised chuckle from the group. The smiles soon faded as the runners were immediately met with a long sharp climb. Tom was off like a rocket despite leaving his Nike Vaporfly at home.
After completing this unpleasant part of the course, the track eased off into a more undulating route.  The sun came out as the runners headed out over the common.
Tom ensures me that he hit the deck on two occasions during the race which reflects his whippet like running ability. Tom finished in a very impressive 01:22:09 which put him in 18th place. Gerry came in with a PB of 01:47:11 which put her in 59th place out of a field of 71 runners.  She was reassured that Tom had made a token gesture to see her in at the finish line, but indulgent cakes and warm drinks were calling him so he quickly abandoned that idea.
It is important to note that Megan Holmes was briefly sighted on this day as she glided past Gerry and came in with a great time of 01:45:09 putting her in 53rd place.
A course record was set that day with a time of 01:02:07. After what seemed like a never ending stream of prize giving, Tom and Gerry hobbled over to the pub where they warmed their gammy toes in front of a log burning fire and enjoyed an alcoholic beverage.

The tough undulating 23k route takes runners from the beaches of Beadnell via cliff top paths roads and fields to the finish at Alnmouth. Efficiently organised by Alnwick Harriers this year’s event saw 780 runners complete the challenging course.A group of 12 JJ’s arrived at Hispburn to park up and take the bus transfer to the start at Beadnell beach. As ever there were last minute kit choices to make, Tom Dowling struggling with the choice of road or trail shoes. Assembling on the broad strand of Beadnell beach the starting gun came as a surprise to the unwary as the the first runners headed north before turning southwards along the coast. A stiff headwind soon thinned out the pack as it headed through the dunes. The threatened rain held off and the sun shone as the temperature climbed to a balmy 24 degrees. Runners were rewarded with perhaps one of the most scenic races of the summer past the beautiful Dunstanburgh Castle, the fishing village of Craster and across to Boulmer.Sharp eyed runners spotted dolphins offshore. Once again Poseidon waved his trident to encourage the runners onwards and we were greatly encouraged by cheers from other JJ’s in support roles including Angus Miller, a late DNS sadly due to a broken wrist. After navigating the cliffs runners were rewarded after the 2 miles to go sign with what felt to many like an endless sprint to the line on Alnmouth beach. The finish line flags finally emerged amid crowds of beach goers. As runners caps were blown backwards by the strong winds JJ’s headed to the line. Trudging slowly over wet sand towards the beach finish. Tom Dowling continued his good form finishing in a time of 1.59.39 (25th MV45) the first JJ across the  line. Followed by Cliff Veitch in a time of 2.00.13 (10th MV55) and Niran Patel at 2.02.33 (28th Snr). Alex Dyter crossed the line next at 2:13:14 swiftly followed by club  chairman Simon Wells  finished in a time of 2.19.23 (46th VM50) having emptied the tank on the long course. First Lady JJ’s were Kate Black and Sophie Reynolds finishing strongly together at 2:23:49 (11th VW50 / 19th Snr).Next across the line were new member Cec making her JJ’s race debut (2:24:45 – 21st Snr), Rosie England (2:29:16 – 10th WV55) David Newman (2:35:17 – 26th MV60),Catherine (2:37:10 – 34th Snr) and Kate Robson (2:51:36 – 40th Snr).Martyn Collins closed the book for JJ’s in a time of 3.09. Post race, runners were rewarded with a great Race T shirt  and a paddle in a bracing North Sea. JJ’s  then moved to the ever popular Lonsdale to shed much sand on the new seating and for a serious post race discussion and analysis.
